Domaine Chanson 2020 En Primeur
This week, a much-anticipated event in the wine calendar, we hosted the 2020 vintage En Primeur tasting with Domaine Chanson at the 5th Floor bar in Harvey Nichols. Managing Director of Domaine Chanson, Vincent Avenel, led the event.
The 2020 vintage was unexpectedly classic and pure. It was a very mild winter with only four days below zero degrees, followed by a warm spring. There were some frosts at the beginning of May, which fortunately didn’t have significant negative consequences. Some episodes of rain followed. Spring conditions were generally favourable for rapid vine growth. There were several heat waves in July and August, so the harvest began early, on the 24th of August, during which they had sunny, excellent weather, and it finished on the 4th of September.
After meticulous sorting of the berries, each bunch was individually cooled. These two crucial steps allowed the team to perfectly control the quality of the grapes and their temperature for the pre-fermentation maceration phase, the goal being to preserve the purity and aromatic freshness of the fruit. Fermentation, mostly in whole bunches, brought balance, complexity, and elegance to the wine. The wines then began their ageing in barrels – 25% to 30% in new barrels.
The red wines have a good depth of colour, with a beautiful concentration of black fruits and spices. On the palette, they have a great roundness and generous texture. The tannic structure is powerful, giving breadth and length. The wines are very balanced with precise terroir definition. The white wines are expressive with a beautifully aromatic nose of exotic fruits, apricot, peach, and flowers mixed with notes of toast and hazelnuts. The wines have fantastic initial palatability, followed by a precise, fresh finish. We can’t wait for you to try them!
